Md. tech entrepreneur auctions domain name pizza.com for millions

Fourteen years ago, Chris Clark shelled out 20 bucks to register the domain name "pizza.com." This afternoon, he sold it for $2.6 million.
"It's crazy, it's just crazy," he said somewhat giddily yesterday morning from his home in North Potomac. By then, a week's worth of anonymous bidding at an online auction site had pushed the price to today's high. The auction closed at 2 p.m. today.
Most domains resell for about $2,000, domain traders say. But the premium names -- the generic ones that cover an entire industry and end in the all-important ".com" -- can draw millions.
Business.com sold for $7.5 million in 1999, and so did diamond.com seven years later, according to an industry trade magazine. In 2006, a Russian alcohol exporter bought vodka.com for $3 million, while sex.com sold for about $12 million in cash and stock. Last month, fund.com sold for $10 million.

Domain Front Running by Registrars Continues to Draw Attention
No one has challenged domain Front Running by registrars in the courts, likely because ... Network Solutions believes the frontrunning problem is occurring ... While NSI states it is merely holding the domain for the consumer at issue, other registrars are accused of actually registering and reselling the domains at inflated price. At least NetSol's protection fee was a set price, $34.99 for four days worth of protection, just until they could return the domain within ICANN's grace period.s.
Every US state has a Consumer Protection Act which would make this practice illegal. It amounts to outright fraud. The registrar deceives the consumer into using its domain availability or Whois search so they can presumably have the option of registering the domain. The search feature is really a search tool for the registrar to see whether there is interest in the domain name. The registrar runs software which instantly registers the domain for itself and either offers it for sale or, at a minimum, makes it impossible for the consumer to register the domain through another register.
